Frequently Asked Questions
What security precautions should one take on safari?
Ensure that you carry a record of the numbers of your passport, airline tickets and travelers cheques. These should be kept in a safe place. Never leave baggage or personal items unattended, especially at airports. Please note that expensive looking jewelry should not be taken on safari.
Are there any requirements regarding health and vaccinations?
Yes! Vaccination requirements change from time to time and we suggest clients consult their local doctor or health department for the latest health precautions. You may also contact the Center for Disease Control for accurate and updated information.
Malaria, including Plasmodium falciparum exists in certain areas. All clients must consult with their doctor or the Center for Disease Control regarding the use of anti-malarial tablets prior to departure.
How much luggage can I take on safari?
The limit is one soft-sided bag per person with a maximum weight of 10 kg (22 lbs), excluding camera equipment. No hard (i.e. plastic/Samsonite) suitcases should be taken on safari. Only back packs without frames will be permitted. As luggage is packed on the roof racks of the safari vehicles it is recommended that clients use old or inexpensive luggage. We recommend you leave your international suitcase at your original hotel and travel with only a soft duffel on the safari. Also note that should you not strictly adhere to the luggage restrictions you will be responsible for any additional cost arising for transportation of any excesses.
What kind of safari clothes should I pack?
Clothing while on safari is casual. We recommend khaki or neutral colored, lightweight clothing. No camouflage. Bright colors and heavy fabrics are not suitable for game viewing. Early morning game drives and evenings around the campfire may be cool, so a light jacket or fleece is suggested. Bring a cap or rimmed hat to keep the sun off your face. You may want a smarter but still casual outfit that is appropriate for lodge accommodations. Clothing should be washable.
What kind of insurance should I take out for my safari trip?
Comprehensive travel insurance is recommended and can be purchased through your travel agent. Your insurance should cover cancellation and curtailment, personal accident, medical, emergency evacuation and baggage. International clients should purchase insurance prior to their arrival in Tanzania.
Do I need a Visa?
Yes, you will need a tourist visa for your stay in Tanzania. This can be purchased at the Kilimanjaro Airport upon your arrival. Each member of the party will need an individual visa.
Do the people of Tanzania speak English?
English is widely spoken but a few words of Swahili can be useful and will be appreciated by the locals.
Currency?
US Dollars and travelers cheques are accepted and convertible at banks and bureau de changes in cities and major tourist areas. Credit cards are not widely accepted and carry poor exchange rates.
